A cold, calculating soulless robot is watching and cataloging every link that goes to your site. Anything that appears unnatural will put up a red flag. A sudden inordinate number of social bookmarks or backlinks from site with low page rank will seem unnatural. Don’t do it.

I also believe that Google likes to see website back links grow ‘organically’ through a natural process rather than via a huge increase in links from some dodgy link building scheme.
