Great stuff Joel. Tenuous link maybe but utterly forgivable. Railway enthusiasts and Railway buffs are not all nerdy train spotters and that well entrenched myth needs adjusting. The further tenuous link with business is that experts in our various business fields have the same wearisome problem- ie getting over a message to uninitiated people who insist on maintaining a shallow understanding of the subject. How many businesses could you help if they saw the point? How many are frankly awful at what you do but make do because of some mistaken idea of value/price/worth vs another mistaken idea of return/result? It's the same with business finances, marketing and the components you hear me refer to as "business building " How much better would their businesses be if they allowed the expert to do their stuff?

Hi Kevin,
thanks for taking the time to comment.

I've seen it before where business owners think that they can do web/SEO/PPC (you name it) themselves - they spend 60% of their time making expensive mistake. However, this is a double whammy for the company, because whilst key business stakeholders are wasting their time on activities better suited to skilled professionals, they are neglecting the things that they *should* be doing - the things they either they do best or that no-one else can do.

Years ago when I did web sites I went on a prospect call, talked the person through what I felt they should be aiming for and then they said thanks for the input but they'd do it themselves. Fair enough, shit happens. When I looked at what they created it looked as though it had been designed by Stevie Wonder on acid!

There will always be potential clients with short arms and long pockets who think they know better. It's just a bit tempting to kick 'em in the round and sensitives when they fall down!

So many businesses have a tuppence ha'penny web site and think it will do. I say to them - you expect people to consult you for your expertise, why should you think it is any different the other way round?
A business owner cannot know all there is to know unless it is a core skill. If it isn't they need help.
